This week's blog contains three parts: 1. My work compared to other similar works & demo feedback. 2. My plan for the midterm demo day. 3. My fabrication progress with the Fragment.
In your journal write about how your work fits in with other work in a similar vein. How is your contribution unique? How does it build off of other’s work? Come to the one-on-one your instructor with specific questions about your work and how to best proceed.
Compare to other creative installations about dreams, mine is more abstract and tangible. The common precedent form would be abstract audio-visual experiences that depicts the author’s dream world or very realistic representation. However, abstract does not mean nonsense, I got great feedback from last class’s demo. These valuable feedbacks gave me tons of ideas of how to make my current iteration more connect to the topic of dream. For example, the effect of led inside the fragment could be breathing effect, like fireflies, would bring calm and peace. The use of background music can also make the whole environment more dreamy. Amy also recommended I could include some fragrance or odor to make it more immersive. I also had a discussion with my peer about the hanging height. While not reaching a conclusion, we all agreed to wait and see after integrating the actual field conditions.
Write about your plans for the midterm demo day. What will you be ready to show. What challenges will you face in the next 2 weeks to make this work? What state do you expect your project to be in, and how do you anticipate it will be received by the faculty critics? Prepare a short 5 minute presentation for the class that details what you will be showing on March 8.
For the midterm demo day, I will be ready to have a movable fragment done. That said, I have already printed the winch system and waiting for combining the motor, and for this week I will be making one of the fragment pieces. So next week is all about putting the parts together. I think the faculty critics will be confused so I need to show them my sketch and my prototype and to explain that this single fragment works so I will make duplicates of them that makes the whole project structure. Also, I won’t be able to hang it on the ceiling for this demo so I will make a bar to hold the fragment so I could hold the bar in hand and show it to the faculties.
Progress update: For this week, I need to get one fragment ready. Hence, I went to Chinatown and bought wood rods, hooks, tracing papers and etc. I first come up with specs and sketches, then I made the frame with wood rod according to my sketch. Then, I screwed two little hook on to the frame structure to connect it to the winch system. Finally, I sticked tracing paper to the fragment frame. One fragment is nicely done
